Use of mathematics in art

Use of mathematics in art:Art and mathematics have a historical relationship. Artists have long used mathematical rations and geometric works in forming their work. For example, ancient Greeks found the golden ratio to be aesthetically pleasing and ancient Egyptians designed pyramids using the 3:4:5 ratio (Bruter et al., 2002). Artists have long been inspired by mathematics and used it to complement their work. Polykleitos a famous Greek writer for example used mathematical proportions while carving the ideal male form. According to Galileo Galilei, the universe is written in a mathematical language thus artists must therefore understand mathematics (geometric figures). Mathematicians on the other hand also seek to interpret art in terms of ratio and geometry.

Mathematics is visible in art though not obvious to the naked eye. However, geometry, measurement and symmetry are often used when creating art (Bruter et al., 2002). Artists also make use of mathematical findings such as the golden ratio to make their work beautiful and realistic.
