Communicable diseases are transmitted causing damages to body cells and in severe cases may lead to death. The chain of infection is a model used to understand and manage the infection process to prevent diseases from spreading and causing more damage. For an infection to occur, the six elements must be present.

Understanding the causes of infection is paramount in the prevention and control of the disease. There are six links in a chain of infection infectious agent, reservoir, of exit, means of transmission, portal of entry, susceptible host.

Major steps have been taken to prevent and break the chain of tuberculosis, but the total elimination of disease still remains a distant goal. A considerable number of people are infected with tuberculosis every year.

The situation is alarming due to the close connection between TB and HIV and TB causes most deaths among HIV patients. However, increasing nursing roles in TB prevention, early detection, care and treatment will be a major milestone in establishing effective TB control programs.
