The theme of brotherhood between doodle and his brother in the scarlet ibis is broadly brought out throughout the story.  Doodle and his brother embrace the issue of brotherhood  throughout the story.  The main character in the book develop a relationship with Doodle.  The story narrated by Brother, the main protagonist in the story narrates an emotional story. From the story, we can see the theme of brotherhood between Brother and Doodle.

Brother always wanted someone to play with, jump, and race around with.   He illustrate his relationship and friendship with his brother Doodle, who is mentally and physically disabled.

Brother is embarrassed to be associated with a disabled person, but he has the ability to overcome pride to assist Doodle in his state. He state that “embarrassed to have a brother who walk.” His cruel nature makes him attempt to kill to avoid the shame “kill by smothering him with a pillow”.

Doodle was born, but he had a heart condition. Doodle’s sickness made him weak and delicate. Brother, however, did not give up on his fragile brother. He continued to express his love as he cared for him. At the age of six, Brother taught Doodle how to walk. This is an illustration for the theme of brotherhood. After he learns how to walk, Brother taught him how to run, swim, and also fight. The fact that Brother showed patience towards his sickly brother and taught him a lot also illustrates brotherhood.
