The Green Knight then reveals his identity as Bertilack, Sir Gawain’s host and lord of the castle. He explains that he was only able to draw blood on the third strike as Sir Gawain did not mention the green girdle while giving him the three kisses.
He nonetheless commends the knight on his bravery. Bertilak explains that the old woman was actually Morgan le Faye, King Arthur’s half-sister and Gawain’s aunt. It is she that sent the Green Knight and also changed Bertilak appearance.
