Sepsis can be referred to as a systemic inflammatory response to a suspected or known infection. Another term septic shock signifies the presence of sepsis with hypotension without fluid resuscitation together with inadequate tissue perfusion. Sepsis is brought about by two main bacterial agents; gram-positive and gram-negative. Other causative agents of septic shock and sepsis include viruses, parasites and fungi. When a microorganism foreign to the body finds its way into a human body, the immune system develops some sort of response. However in septic shock and sepsis cases, this response is exaggerated, as there is a heightened coagulation and inflammation, as well as decrease in fibrinolysis.

Multisystem response is activated to compensate for the shock. If it is corrected in time, the shock is able to be compensated for the effects it had on tissue perfusion, and the patient can recover without any effects on the tissue. If it is not corrected in time, the body cannot compensate for the tissue perfusion and the patient may go into a progressive and dangerous stage of shock.
