Religious Exemptions for Private Businesses

There are legislative debates in many states over gay marriage which addresses the question as to whether religious objectors with private businesses can be exempt from recognizing individuals in same-sex marriages. According to the Center for Arizona Policy, the United States Senate was expected to vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, where people will not be discriminated against on the basis of their sexual orientation while searching for jobs.

As the legislators make a decision as to whether private businesses which are for-profit can be entitled a religious opt-out from the generally applicable non-discriminatory law on the basis of the owners’ religious beliefs, the controversy surrounding this issue is expected to continue. In case the court provides a ruling that these claims are permissible, far-reaching ramifications are expected, with the inclusion of civil rights laws.
