Psychological Risks of Police Work

Police officers are often exposed to human indecency and pain while dealing with a suspicious and hostile public toll on them, long period of boredom, shift changes and pervasive risk that are part of police work cause severe work-related stress. As a result, alcoholism and dependency become an ongoing problem among police officers (Hennig-Fast, Werner, Lermer, Latscha, Meister, Reiser & Meindl, 2009). Alcohol use is an acceptable culture in the police department because it is a way of coping with work-related stressors.
