King David who spoke out tis words was able to use the imagery associated with herding so effortlessly since he had at one time been a shepherd himself. A shepherd is known to do all he can to protect his flocks from danger and predators by leading them well.

That is to show that by trusting fully in God and following his guidance, he had received so many blessings that they were now overflowing. In the sixth verse, David expounds on his assertions by stating his belief that if he followed God and trusted him as his good shepherd, then he would enjoy “goodness and mercy which would follow him throughout his life and later in God’s house” (James, 2013).
