Technology can be described as the branch of knowledge, which handles the creation and utilization of technical means as well as their interrelation with society, life, and the environment. It draws upon subjects such as engineering, applied science, industrial arts, and pure science (Snow, 2007). For that reason, police technology may refers to the wide variety of technological and scientific methods, equipment, and techniques used in policing.

As science advances, technologies that police depend on also advances in order to apprehend criminals and prevent crime. Police technology became recognized as a scientific and distinct academic discipline in the 60s, and since then it has become a growing professional body. In recent years, the rate of technological change is so fast. Nowadays, public safety is more sophisticated, and communication methods are much faster.

This aids in the implementation of their public security mission, with the primary goal of investigating and preventing crime. The rate of social media utilization by law enforcement, whereas already high, is expected to rise even more in the future. So far, few agencies have implemented formal training programs, resulting in obstacles to broad and consistent application all through the law enforcement.
