Movie Review Assignment; this is a documentary film directed by Josh Aronson, and produced by Roger Weisberg released in the year 2000 that follows the story of the Artinian extended family, which has for three generations been afflicted by deafness, following the lives of two brothers.

Peter Artinian and Chris Artinian who battle with the decision on whether to get cochlear implants for their deaf children or not. Chris Artinian has a proficient hearing, married to Mari, an equally adeptly hearing wife borne of deaf parents, with whom he has twin boys, one of whom is deaf.
The views expressed about deafness as a culture and identity did not sit well with me. The opinion of a lack of continuum between the hearing world and the deaf community breeds a feeling of exclusion and discrimination.

The already existing opinions of a special bond among the users of the American Sign Language that is non-accepting of members of the deaf community “ditching their bandwagon” reinforces negative attitudes towards the deaf community, complicating especially the situation for parents and guardians of deaf children who have to make decisions concerning whether to get them hearing implants or not.

Another issue of concern for me is the push-and-pull between the deaf and hearing proponents. Aronson can portray the passionate convictions by both sides as well as being able to portray the central role of the deaf individual in deciding whether to implant or not. References
