Mononucleosis is an infectious viral disease cause by the Epstein Barr Virus. It is also known as glandular fever or Filatov’s disease. Similarly, Mononucleosis is known as the kissing disease because it is transmitted orally through exchange of saliva.

As mentioned in the introduction, its main cause is the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV). Actually, close to 90% of the cases of Mononucleosis is cause by the Epstein Barr Virus.

The EBV is member of the Herpesviridae family of DNA viruses and is one of the most common viruses on the planet earth. Studies have also indicated that the Human Cytomegalovirus (CMV), which is also a member of the Herpesviridae family, causes Mononucleosis though its rate of causing the disease is quite low, as compared to the rate of the Epstein Barr Virus.
