Rhetoric as an art has been defined differently over the ages with different scholars. However, Aristotle, who is thought to have been the inventor of the art, gave the most accepted definition of rhetoric. Aristotle defined the art of rhetoric as an art of persuasion of influence particularly in term of politics.

The voice employed during their speeches was different. While Douglass employed a more authoritative voice towards his approach, Margaret took a more appealing softer approach. This also meant that the words they used were different in tones, and Douglass’ being more authoritative (Brummett 21).
