Hydraulic Fracking is a process used in 90% of the natural gas wells within the United States. In this process millions of water gallons, chemicals and sand are pushed underground to break the rock into pieces so as to release the gas. (Holloway & Rudd, 2013) About 600 chemicals are utilized in fracking fluid. They include known toxins and carcinogens such as lead, uranium, radium, mercury, etc. Researchers are concerned that this chemicals may pose a huge threat both underground and when fluids which are waste are handled and at times leaked to the surface. (Spellman, 2013)

Even though discontinuing fracking in the United States would cause a massive decline in present U.S. energy security, the use fracking by natural gas industry pose a costly and dangerous detour from the country’s clean energy future (Spellman, 2013). To solve this predicament, the United States can sort for other safer alternatives of gas and oil extraction. It can as well turn to importing natural gas as a way of compensating the current energy need of Americans.
