How religion and culture affect sex and sexual dysfunction

How religion and culture affect sex and sexual dysfunction : Sexual and reproductive health is crucial for safe, responsible and satisfying sex lives among people. An optimistic approach to sexuality and understanding the complexity of factors that shape sexual behavior is required in sexual health.  According to a report by WHO, sexuality is experienced and expressed through fantasies, thoughts, desires, attitudes, beliefs, values, behaviors and practices, as well as roles and relationships (WHO, 2006). Sexual dysfunction is defined as an inability or difficulty experienced by a couple or individual, during any stage of normal or regular sexual activity.

There is a link between highly religious upbringing and sexual dysfunction and associated resistance for proven sex therapy techniques. Resistance is associated with the superego that the devout individuals develop at a young age. Therapists have to be sensitive with religious values and beliefs when dealing with religious individuals to ensure successful therapy completion (Simpson & Ramberg, 1992). Culture and religion continues to contribute to the success of sex therapy because of the principles that make the recipients feel judged and sinful.
