The financial problems faced by professional athletes were first brought to the light by the magazine Sports Illustrated in 2009. According to their report, many (78 percent) former NFL players go bankrupt or are under financial problems after 2 years of retirement, this has been attributed to divorce, joblessness, bad investments, extravagant spending and medical problems (Billy , 2012).

It is not uncommon or unusual for students to call off a semester after squandering all their money on alcohol and partying. Students also have to learn how to appropriately spent their money i.e. spent it on projects or items that will pay back. A number of the athletes in the documentary lost a significant amount of their fortune through bad investments. (Billy , 2012)
