Like White Elephant is a story full of literary meaning and symbolism, thus the numerous interpretations of the major themes. The short story by Ernest Hemingway is about a man and woman named Jig who find themselves at crossroads. Both of them are waiting for a train that is headed to Madrid from Barcelona.  As they wait for the train at the station that is supposed to arrive in forty minutes.

In the meantime, they both decide to relax in a bar as they wait for the train.  The bar thus contributes the sculpting of the main premise of the story. Ernest Hemingway story explores alcohol as a symbolic tool as well as the way it can be used as a buffer for difficult conversations.
