Fredrick Douglass

Douglass is not sure of his date of birth like many other slaves. He indicates that he was born sometime in 1817 or 1818, and separated from his mother afterwards. His father, Captain Anthony, owned hundreds of slaves and was a rich man. He also owned the Great House Farm, a large central plantation. There was a brutal life in the plantation. Slaves were overworked, received little food, no beds, exhausted, and few articles of clothing. Slaves were whipped and beaten all the time with or without breaking the rules. They were even sometimes shot by the overseers of the plantation. The plight of the slaves led to the rising of Fredrick Douglass. He had a purpose to fight for the freedom of slaves.

Fredrick Douglass was an African American, who abandoned slavery and started championing for the rights of the American colored community. He was very vocal and was well known for his great oratory skills. Douglass was a firm believer in the right to freedom for all notwithstanding of gender, race or immigration status. Douglass was the first to be nominated as African American vice president. Since he was advocating freedom, it would be impossible to pass the message on if he could not be understood and, therefore, it was very critical that he is understood by his audience. This meant that he had to be clear while conversing.
