Evidence for Complementary and Alternative Intervention

Evidence for Complementary and Alternative Intervention: According to National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, CAM refers to a group of varied medical and healthcare systems, products and practices not currently considered to be component of conventional medicine. There is empirical evidence that some CAM treatment practices are both positive and safe. However, for other CAM practices, evidence is lacking, negative, or inconclusive (Ernst et al., 2006).

A significant percentage of people suffering from cancer use apply some form of CAM. But it is not that most cancer patients who use CAM are not satisfied with conventional medicine; they just find that CAM interventions are appealing to their values and beliefs with r regard to life and health. Suffering from cancer is an exhausting, frightening, and demanding experience.

Also, of importance is the choice of person proving CAM, for instance, information about their licensing and education requirements because such requirements vary by state. Safety of CAM interventions must be put into consideration because, for example, “natural” does not necessarily mean that treatment or product is safe (Rummans et al., 2006).

Another basic consideration of CAM treatment is the cost particularly because these treatments are typically not covered under government-funded or commercial health insurance. A cancer patient who spends his or her life’s savings to seek an unproven “cure” will most likely be disappointed.
