Ethnocentrism in Your United States: Ethnocentrism refers to the belief that one’s ethnic group is superior to others’ (Hammond & Axelrod, 2006). Although the concept sounds like it is bad, ethnocentrism has both positive and negative characteristics. For instance, for a minority ethnic category under oppressive circumstances, ethnocentrism acts as a platform upon which the group creates sustains a unique identity over long periods.

Nonetheless, there is a myriad other ways in which people around the world do things that are just unique – not “wrong” -, and people have valid reasons for doing what they do. Therefore, because most Americans tend to say what they think and not what they know about other people of the world, when they verbalize their judgmental thoughts, they may offend the feelings of their hosts abroad (Omohundro, 2008).
