Down’s syndrome, or trisomy 21 is a disorder that is a function of there being part or all of a third chromosome 21 copy. The genetic disorder is associated with delays in physical growth, some characteristic facial features and an intellectual incapacity which may range from mild to moderate. Though some children with the condition may be educated in typical classroom settings, some require special education. Children with Down’s syndrome have special needs. My son is one such child. This is his story.

I appeal to two groups of people. To parents; I ask that you may teach your children about all kinds of diversity. Teach them to judge people by the content of their character rather than their differences. To the public school system; many children have only mild intellectual disabilities and would like to learn in the typical classroom setting. The classrooms however need to be equipped to cater for their special needs. The publics school system should ensure that the staff in all schools are trained on how to deal with special needs students.
