Death and dying:This paper is about the Obon festival also called the Lantern Lighting festival in Japan. The method and intensity of this ritual depend on the geographical tradition and the influence of western civilization. Japanese believe that the souls of the ancestors return to the community or to the loved ones during the Obon and hence the relatives must unite and clean the existing graves and light lanterns directing the spirits to the house.

Majority of Buddhist celebrate this festival by presenting offerings of specially prepared food for the spirits of their ancestors that are put on altars in their homes and temples. As the sunsets, people light paper lanterns, which are the placed around the houses to facilitate the spirits to find the homes of their loved ones (Freeman, 1998).

Every Obon festival is unique; however, majority mainly involves carnival games with meal booths serving cultural Japanese foods such as udon, teriyaki, sushi, and dango. Some of the Buddhist celebrate this festival by presenting offerings of specially prepared food for the spirits of their ancestors that are put on altars in their homes and temples.
