Civil rights movement

The African American population is a significant descendant of slaves from Africa and made to work for whites in their lands. The white people owned the slaves and made them work in their plantation by invoking harsh and inhumane treatment.

However, slavery was abolished in 1865 but, nonetheless, attracted the upcoming of discrimination and segregation all known as Jim Crow Laws. The blacks, therefore, devised ways by which to overcome discrimination as discussed below.

Firstly, the African American people with the representation by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) employed legal tactics to fight against discrimination. The lawsuits aim at fighting against discrimination of black people in gaining education, in the transport, hospitality and hospital industries where the blacks were facing restriction. The lawsuits were instrumental as they were breaking down segregation structures that were put up giving the black population liberty. For instance; the U.S Supreme Court in 1954 ruled in favor of a third-grade student by the name Linda Brown. She had been denied to attend an all-white public school in Kansas that was nearest to her home.Persisting discrimination and implications over rulings made such as the closure of schools when black children were enrolling greatly frustrating the blacks. They eventually changed their focus from lawsuits to mass protests, sit-ins and inception of the civil rights movement.
