characteristics of characters in Beowulf

Beowulf is one of the oldest epic that exists today. The story revolves around Beowulf heroic acts which include fighting monsters that caused misery to the people. Beowulf is a warrior and later rises to become a king. The main theme of the story is establishing an identity based on the society expectations. A person lineage and social class in the community defines the identity and characteristics of each character in the story.

Beowulf, Hrothgar, Grendel and Grendel’s mother are three characters from different worlds but show that lineage and social status determines character. Beowulf is a hero and he fights monsters to build his reputation. Conversely, Grendel and his mother are monsters from lineage of Cain who terrorize human beings and cause misery. Hrothgar is from lineage of kings and he uses his position to mentor other leaders and serve his subjects well.
