In the epic poem, Beowulf, heroes must undergo a dangerous journey and face an enemy treating the nation. An epic hero embodies and represents the most cherished values and ideals of a society. Anglo-Saxon heroes exhibit a series of attributes that separate them from the normal men and women in the society because they rely on them to liberate them from the oppression of monster and other threats. There are several qualities that make Beowulf a hero that assist in understanding characteristics of Anglo-Saxon epic heroes.Appearance is the first character of a hero where the hero must look the part. Beowulf is greeted by the first Dane, who sees him with an acknowledgement if his awesome presence. The poem describe illustrate the appearance of Beowulf by asserting ‘I have never seen a mightier warrior on earth that is one of you, a man in battle dress’ (Heaney 250)
