Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

According to DSM-V attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition characterized by an insistent form of hyperactivity and or inattention that alters the normal functioning of an individual. Inattention in an individual is manifested in ADHD with the lack of persistence, wandering off from tasks given, being disorganized but not due to lack of defiance and also difficulty in sustaining focus.

Hyperactivity, on the other hand, is the too much motor activity when it is not needed or appropriate; there is also excessive fidgeting and talkativeness. Among adults, hyperactivity manifests by the extreme agitation that may also wear others off. Such individuals may also be impulsive whereby the make hasty decisions without giving it a thought. They may end up harming themselves due to quick decision-making. For example, the individual may just cross a busy highway without looking which poses a threat to their life and that of the other motorists on the road.

ADHD is a disease that is treatable and also controllable. However, it may result in severe social, emotional and psychological problems to the patient and also the family. It is, therefore, an illness that needs treatment but at the same time, the entire family needs to go through therapeutic interventions so as to cope with the resulting distress.
