A&P by John Updike

A&P by John Updike: This short story by John Updike was first published in The New Yorker in 1961. Ever since then it has been widely analysed and is considered a classic. It is the story of three barefoot girls who are also scantily dressed. They walk into an A & P grocery store, and the customers are shocked. However, they draw the attention and admiration of two young gentlemen working at the cash records. The manager notices the ladies and he tells them that they should be properly dressed if they have to enter the store and in the future, they will have to abide to the policy of the store by covering themselves properly.

All men in the store show some degree of sexual interest. Lengel, the store’s manager, fights this desire and embarrasses the ladies. Another major theme in this story in the mystery of the human minds. Throughout the story, Sammy thinks that all the customers are easy to understand and he categorizes them. It is, however, ironical that he makes a stupid decision when the girls walk into the store. He fails to understand himself and gets controlled by his hormones. He ends up regretting his decisions.
