American history

Abigail Adams (1744-1818) was the second American first lady between 1797 and 1801. She was married to John Adams, the United States’ second President (Akers, 1980). During the American Revolution, John’s legal and political work confined him mostly in Philadelphia, effectively making sure that the couple remained separated for extended periods. While away, Abigail took care of her family’s household and business and took care of their four kids, all the while keeping up a robust correspondence with her absent husband on the prevailing political issues (Akers, 1980).

Abigail’s influence on her husbands political issues continued even after John Adams was eventually elected president in 1797. As the new president, John Adams wrote, “I never wanted your Advice and assistance more in my life…The Times are critical and dangerous, and I must have you here to assist me.” (Adams, 1975). When Abigail became the First Lady, she continued be a staunch supporter of her husband.
